Benefits of Summer Programsby : Rachel Gliss

During the summer months, many children have up to 8 hours of free, available time each day. This free time generally can cause children to lose interest in academics or learning, and in turn, to lose precious skills that were being developed during the school year.
Every parent knows it is important to plan activities, ahead of time, so your children can keep busy during the summer. Summer programs offer many unique opportunities. In addition to providing entertainment, these opportunities may also provide benefits which will aid in your child’s future success.
Almost all summer programs run on a regular schedule, usually daily or weekly. Being on a schedule will help provide order and will help your children successfully navigate their activities and responsibilities. Like school, your child will have to be punctual, complete work and tasks, and manage their time. This established routine will ease the transition back to school when it resumes in the fall.
Another major benefit is that summer programs can prevent “summer learning loss,” which generally happens to students who engage in little to no educational activities throughout the summer. Research has shown that learning loss occurs in many children quite rapidly when particular skills are not used frequently. The rate of learning loss can vary upon skill or task, but typically skills with multiple steps and procedures tend to decay quicker than those involving tasks.
The one subject hurt most by this “learning loss” is mathematics. According to the National Summer Learning Association, “Most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months.”
Summer programs also can build self-confidence and self-esteem. Many of these programs encourage children to take safe risks and learn from them, whether they succeed or fail. Further, they provide opportunities for children to face conquer new challenges and learn how to succeed.
Finally, summer programs can allow for teamwork among peers and open new relationships that children may not develop within the classroom setting. Learning team skills are important because the ability of working in a team is one of the most vital skills required in professional life. Additionally, through teamwork, your child will enhance their communication skills as they interact with other children and instructors.
There are many options when choosing a summer program. Opportunities can range from several hours a day, to week long events, and even overnight opportunities. If you are unsure as to which option is best for your child, here are some things to consider:
1) What goals do you have for your child?
2) Are you looking for educational enrichment, physical activity, or a mixture of both?
3) What does your summer availability look like?
4) What is your overall budget?
All in all, there are a many, many summer activity options for your child, from all of which your child will reap lots of benefits. Here are a few options to jumpstart your child’s summer success and prevent “summer learning loss”. These options will increase your child’s confidence, allow them to explore new opportunities, and prepare them for another successful school year!
